The Community Enrichment Organization Family Resource Center was formed in March of 1991 by a grassroots group of volunteers interested in improving Edgecombe County. We are a volunteer-driven organization and rely upon the participation from the entire community of neighborhoods, churches, civic clubs and industries.
Since March 1991, the Community Enrichment Organization has been working to enhance the lives of families by providing information and referral, parenting classes, after-school programs, teen pregnancy prevention, HIV/AIDS prevention, and family services.
Now 19 years later, founders, board members, staff, volunteers, supporters and contributors can count the milestones and the strong alliances that are enriching and engaging the community. Annually, 100 youth attend after-school programs at three CEO sites in the county, and approximately 60 families receive family support services. We currently have 19 teen mothers participating in weekly meetings. We have approximately 10 males participating in our recently formed Recovery & Recycling Certification Program. The Community Enrichment Organization has created partnerships with Edgecombe County Departments of Social Services, Health, Cooperative Extension, Edgecombe County Public Schools, Down East Partnership for Children, Area L AHEC, OIC, UNC-Chapel Hill, Town of Tarboro, Town of Princeville, and many of our faith-based organizations and churches.
Community Enrichment Organization overcame the loss of its offices from Hurricane Floyd’s “Flood of the Century” in September 1999, which destroyed nine years of records and memorabilia of services to the Edgecombe County community. But the strength of the Community Enrichment Organization was not embedded in places and things; it resided in the hearts of the many supporters and contributors who sat at the “Table of Hope” in March 1991 to strategize plans to improve and empower our families. At those meetings, an alliance of citizens and representatives from area agencies and businesses was formed and created a synergistic association that came to be the Community Enrichment Organization. The founders’ hopes were that the organization would provide a unified voice and force to discuss community concerns and address ways to improve conditions affecting family cohesiveness, academic performance, and industrial progress.
The Community Enrichment Organization could not have marked this level of progress without the help of those who provided staff, in-kind donations, and monetary support. On behalf of the citizens of Edgecombe County, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the many who devote their time and energy to make a difference in the lives of others.
